With wins on Sunday, the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees both clinched wild card spots bringing the historical rivalry to the postseason. This will be the first time that the Red Sox have played the Yankees in the wild card and first time playing them in the postseason since 2018, when the Red Sox won the ALDS 3-1, en route to winning the World Series. The last winner take all Red Sox vs. Yankees playoff game? Game 7 of the 2004 ALCS.

The Red Sox and Yankees may be two of the most evenly matched teams this year,  in nineteen games against each other the Red Sox hold the season series win going 10-9 and out scoring the Yankees by one run in those nineteen games.

The Red Sox will pitch Nathan Eovaldi, Eovaldi has 3.75 ERA this year with 195 strikeouts in 182.1 innings pitched. In his postseason career he has a 1.61 ERA in 22.1 innings pitched all with the Boston Red Sox during their 2018 World Series run. Gerrit Cole will be starting for the New York Yankees and this season had a 3.23 ERA. In his postseason career Cole has a 2.68 ERA spread across five years in which he made the postseason. This will be his third wild card game pitched, he has gone 1-1 in the previous two.

Both teams enter this game with crucial injuries, J.D. Martinez will not play for the Red Sox due to an ankle injury suffered while running out to play the field in game 162 against the Washington Nationals. For the Yankees D.J. Lemahieu hit the IL a few days ago with a hip injury. The Red Sox roster also leaves off ace pitcher Chris Sale, as he started game 162 and would have been on short rest coming into the wild card game.

The winner of the Wild Card game will go on to keep their World Series aspirations alive and move on to the American League Divisional Series to face the American League East division winner Tampa Bay Rays, the only team in the American League with 100 wins this season. In the meantime, let's get wild!
