Blockbuster deal with massive ramifications for years to come.
While this move could seem unimportant to other teams in the league, this changes a lot for the Patriots. The top 4 quarterbacks in this year’s draft (Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Zach Wilson, and Trey Lance) could all be gone within the first four picks of the draft. Trevor Lawrence has been a lock at the number one overall spot since he won a national championship with Clemson in 2018. Justin Fields showed this year he is also a top tier quarterback and is a valuable selection. The Jets have been talking about drafting a quarterback with Sam Darnold having a 13-25 record, and San Fran trading with Miami instead of New York could cement the idea that they are drafting a QB at two. San Francisco has been in quarterback rumors all offseason about trading away Jimmy Garoppolo and acquiring DeShaun Watson from Houston, but after all the lawsuits against Watson the niners are putting all their eggs in the future basket, most likely taking a quarterback with the number three pick. Finally the Atlanta Falcons have the number four pick. Being in a tough division already with Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New Orleans Saints, who have won the division the last four years, Atlanta may be looking towards the future and drafting a quarterback to learn under Matt Ryan and grow with young receivers Calvin Ridley and Russel Gage. The Falcons could build around whatever quarterback is available at four.
Now for the Patriots this still leaves Mac Jones (Alabama) and Kyle Trask (Florida) available to draft at 15. While teams like the Cincinnati Bengals and the Dallas Cowboys who are ahead of the Patriots, most likely will not take a quarterback, there are plenty of teams that could take one. The Carolina Panthers (eighth pick) are a prime example of this, while they are still paying Teddy Bridgewater, this could be a great time for a rookie QB to learn the playbook and offense in a transition year. With young players like Christian McCaffery, Robby Anderson, DJ Moore, and David Moore (all 27 or under) the Panthers may be smart to look towards the future.
The Patriots may now have to trade up into the top 10 picks or wait till next year to get their quarterback of the future if they go through the draft. A less thought about option is via trade, Jimmy G could soon be shipped out of San Fran as the niners have said they would take a better QB if they had the option. DeShaun Watson could still be a target for the Pats, barring the results of the multiple lawsuits against him, even though that may not even stop Bill Belichick who has a past of acquiring players with an inadequate background, to say the least, for cheap even if it is for a short stint (Josh Gordon, Antonio Brown, and Randy Moss). Both Garoppolo and Watson would fit Belichick’s win now thoughts, and would also help the Patriots in the future with Jimmy G being 29 and Watson being 25 there are still plenty of good years left behind their arms.
