Long-time Red Sox second baseman, Dustin Pedroia, has officially retired at the age of 37.

Pedroia has been plagued by injuries in the last few years, never fully recovering from Manny Machado sliding into the back of his knee in 2017. Since the beginning of 2018, Pedroia has played in nine games, and had a combined three hits.

Pedroia is one of the greatest players in franchise history of the Boston Red Sox. Having a career .299 batting average and 140 home runs in 14 years. Pedroia was the 2007 Rookie of the Year, and followed up in 2008 by winning MVP. The four-time Gold Glove winner was also known for not being afraid of getting dirty on the field, giving himself the nickname of the “Muddy Chicken”.

Pedroia was a fan favorite not only for his performance on the field, but also for his sound bites. One of the most famous was when Pedroia talked about David Ortiz in his slump and Pedroia said “ A couple of years ago, I had 60 at-bats and I was hitting .170, and everyone was ready to kill me too…. And what happened? Laser show”.

The three time World Series Champion is expected to have his number retired by the Boston Red Sox for his amazing tenure with the team.

Even though it has felt Pedroia has been retired for years for Red Sox fans, seeing his picture in a graphic next to a retirement post was a sad sight to see and the end of an era for the Boston Red Sox
