Before the final game of the season for the Patriots, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Cam Newton and the Patriots would part ways after the 2020 season making Newton a free agent for the second year in a row and giving the Patriots a vacancy at the most important position on the roster. This offseason provides many opportunities for the Patriots to get an all star caliber quarterback and try to win or to get a younger quarterback and rebuild for a few years before trying to return to the superbowl.
Free Agents
Dak Prescott- The Cowboys star quarterback has had trouble agreeing with a deal with Jerry Jones and the Cowboys the last few years. The Patriots are expected to have the fourth largest cap space giving them plenty of room to offer Prescott a more than fair offer. While only playing 5 games in 2020 Dak was a star in his previous years especially in 2019 with 4900 passing yards and 30 touchdown passes.
Phillip Rivers- Rivers is a proven quarterback who can still win leading the Colts to a winning season even without their star wide receiver T.Y. Hilton having a good year. Rivers would fit a Bill Belichick offense perfectly being able to read defenses and throwing many short passes much like he did in Indianapolis this year. The only concern with Rivers is his age and how he will perform at age 39, but age has never been a factor for Patriots quarterbacks.
Trades
Carson Wentz- Even though he had a terrible 2020 and got replaced halfway through the year for Jalen Hurts, a change of scenery could be a good thing for Wentz. Only a few years ago was Wentz in the MVP conversation and helped lead an Eagles team to the playoffs that eventually beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl. Bill Belichick’s playcall and offense also seems like a much better fit for Wentz than Doug Pederson’s.
Jimmy Garropolo- The 49ers have said they would like to move on from the former Patriots quarterback after he got injured again in 2020. The only concern with Jimmy G is how injury prone he is, with New England he is undefeated in 2 starts which all occured in 2016 during Brady’s suspension. He has proven he can be a starter since leaving New England with his only fully healthy season he led the 49ers to the Super Bowl while throwing 27 touchdowns.
Draft
Mac Jones- The Heisman Trophy finalist has been very good with Alabama this year leading them to the National Championship which will be played next week. Mac Jones may be not the most athletic player, but can read his options very well and knows which throw is the smartest to make. He is currently projected to be drafted by the Patriots with the 15th overall pick.
Kyle Trask- Another Heisman finalist but this time with a different team. He led Florida to being the number 7 rank team in the nation. Trask has proven he has an NFL caliber arm but his pocket awareness and ability to escape can be iffy at times. Trask is currently projected to be drafted 31st overall by the Saints, and it would be a total Belichick move to trade down in the draft to get more picks.
